2009 Honda Civic battery problem

Created October 6, 2010, at 11:30 am by vjercolani1

I wrote Honda last year about no AC when the battery is low for my 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid and the outside temperature is high. They called and stated that the AC will not work when the battery is low and it is not a problem but an anomaly because they know about the issue. They would also not answer my letter in writing. I also had the IMA light come on in July and they did the software upgrade twice and since then my MPG has gone down to 35 MPG. Also you can drive someplace and charge the battery completely but even if you turn the car off for 1 minutes when you return and start your car the first thing the software upgrade does is discharge the battery and you sit at a light 10 seconds later and your car is idling at 1,200 RPM to charge a battery that was completely charged and the software change is saving the battery and costing you mileage. I would hope that some lawyer can bring a class action suite against Honda for the 2009 Honda Civic because they sold you a car knowing of the problems and have no want to fix the issues. If you live in a hot climate like we do you should have the option of being told the AC will not work on hot days.
The auto stop feature will also not work on hot days no matter how much of a charge the battery has nor how you try to stop. Also pulling out on a 75 MPH highway up hill with a low battery you take your life in your hands because the car feels like it is pulling a 1,000 lb weight and the car is screaming at 5,000+ RPM’s and goes no place. The only thing on the Civic hybrid that is a Hybrid is the decal on the back of the vehicle.

I feel your pain, just yesterday my IMA and engine light came on--I also have a 2009. Unfortunately, I found this website after I purchased the car new a year and a half ago. When I turned my car in yesterday for repair I expressed my concerns about the updates and to my surprise they agreed with most everything the ima/battery blogs mention.

Like a lot of people, I'm faced with a decision to replace the car while it still has a little value or drive it until the battery dies and continue to replace the battery as I live in one of the hottest place in the US: Phoenix, AZ.

I am beyond upset about my latest findings on the defective IMA systems with the civic hybrids. Being a Honda owner for years, I thought surely I did my homework and was downright giddy when I bought a new one last January. Now I'm experiencing the same problem at 17,000 miles which, at least, is under warranty. But now I have to decide if I want to keep it when the future doesn't bode well for the civic hybrid. What would the rest of you do in my case? I'm leaning toward trading it in on a crv which I had before for over 10 years with no problems. Just love the gas mileage so much on what I've got.

I have a 2009 civic hybird, all was good, until 17000 miles, I was getting 47 hwy, 38 in town,, Ima update at 17K, mileage drops by 10 per gal,, they reset the Ima. same thing mileage stays the same. I now have 25 K and no help from the dealer or Honda. We need class action,, or $70000 refund or they can put car where sun dont shine. I went to Honda to see about a buy back, guess what? Honda dealer Tucson we are not buying any Hybirds at this time.. Wonderful.. anybody else interrested?

Im in the exact same boat. I bought this Hybrid new in May 2010. Even though it is a 2009 it only had 200km's (approx 125 miles) on it. Everything was going great. I was averaging 42 MPG until it got a little cooler out. The dealership told me that it wouldnt get as good MPG in the winter. Ive lived here all my life so I knew this, but it was getting BRUTAL MPG. I was getting just over 20 MPG a couple of days ago. The autostop doesnt come on and my IMA light and engine light both are on. I brought it to the dealership and they "upgraded" the software and the light was off...for a day. The advisor told me that they would have to replace the IMA battery and that they would let me know when to take it in. I've called them a few times since and they are not returning my calls.
I too had a 1998 Honda CRV and it was amazing. Absolutely no problems until about a month before I traded it in for the Hybrd; My transmission was slipping.
Even though I have warranty for 5 yrs, Im not sure if I want to keep this wimpy car. I only have a little over 7000 kms (4350 miles) and im thinking of getting rid of it if Im going to be taking it in every couple of weeks. I researched the car for awhile and I never came across any huge problems, but i too never came across this sight...

The software update specifically tells the IMA to use the battery less. This means worse MPG. I went from 44mpg down to 33mpg. American Honda says this is normal operations to use the battery less so we won't see battery issues. Only problem is I bought the car for the 44mpg. If you have an IMA light, that is covered under warranty. What about us that didn't have a light and they upgraded the software. American Honda says they stand behind their warranties however there is nothing wrong with my car.

The only way to fix the problem is to NOT buy Honda. Buying a CRV only helps Honda again. Look at Toyota (or other brands) and after you purchase, bring it buy the Honda dealership and show them what they lost out on. The dealers will them begin to speak to American Honda corporate to let them know. Buying another Honda only puts more money in their pocket and they win both ways.

just had a problem with the ima and the ignition light, it's now at the dealers. reading all this I have a feeling, having them replace the battery will not be the end. please keep posting concerns, it helps when i have to deal with the dealers.

About three months ago I bought my 2009 Honda Civic Hybird and one month ago ima and engine light came on they worked on it up dating the computer they said that's all it needed. Wrong last week took back lights on again another missed work day. Was told needed battery replaced was on order would call and would take one half day to replace. I checked and it is in now still waiting for that call and only getting 23 miles per gal. My first Honda may be my last What a deal !

My 2009 has over 53,000 milles on it and my IMA light and outline just came on today. I am literally shaking with anger about this as I read what I have been reading. Please pray for me as I confront the dealer tomorrow. I am a poorly paid school teacher and I cannot dig deep and come up with $3000 right after CHRISTMAS, for Pete's sake! OMG, if I had know this.....sigh. Anyone else who can help me can write to wpoohness@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance.

I also have IMA problems. Each time the ima light came on Honda did the software update, now they say that is it....
The fuel consumption is now 20 % higher than when it was new, and I bought the car for its low gas use. I asked if the updates can be cancelled and go back to original settings but this is not possible.
The idea of a class action sounds good.
Any more feed back will be appreciated.

I have written letters that have fallen of deaf ears-I also live in Arizona and when I come to a stop the A/C stops blowing cool air and hot air comes out-I've taken my 2009 Civic Hybrid into the dealer several times all they do is mess with the system and I get worse gas mile (36 MPG) Hondo knew that the Civic would not work in the hot desert yet sold the cars anyway- I would ne happy to join a class action-All I want is a replacement vehicle, I spent close to $30,000 because I upgraded to leather and NAV all I get is a hot interior in the summer and worse gas MPG now

HELP!

I can relate to this, I have a 2009 Civic Hybrid and living in Arizona the heat really takes a toll on this car, with the A/C running it takes a good 40 seconds to go from 0 to 65mph which is very dangerous trying to enter a freeway.

I've also had the IMA issue's.

I've only got 6 more lease payments to make and i'll be all too happy to turn this car back in and walk away from it. Never to step foot in a Honda showroom again. These cars are junk and how they get a high quality rating is beyond me unless those survey's are paid for by Honda.

I join the numerous frustrated 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid owners. I bought the car intentionally for the gas mileage (supposedly 40-43 mpg) because of high mileage driven. Bought car new and had trouble almost immediately. Gas mileage dropped (and is now at 26 mpg!), power dropped (even got stuck and couldn't back up the small incline of a friend's driveway), and have put my life on the line too many times to count when attempting to pull out into traffic or enter highway (0-70 in 45-50 seconds on bad days). Began complaining to Honda dealer and they contacted American Honda and have test drove, taken "snap shots", upgrades, and replaced the IMA battery in my car 3 times so far, but they report that everything is operating within normal ranges and cannot determine a problem. What next? HELP!!!

I have a 2008 Civic Hybrid with 25k on it. We are experiencing the same issues. Decreased mileage, (was 46-48, now 40-41)increased "generation" mode at stops, sluggish performance. Dealer says they can't do anything til the IMA light comes on--in the meantime the clock ticks out on the pro-rated warranty, which jumps alarmingly at the 3-year point.

As an aside the original tires wore out at 20K, another disappointment. You just can't drive something more gently than a hybrid....20K?!

Perhaps the worst part is, we bought this one because the 2003 CH we had was flawless in every respect--including the battery system (and the tires). [And it never once hit "generation" mode in 5 years--I don't know if it had that mode.] We only traded when oil hit $140 and I said, "I want to start Armageddon with a new car". The expected battery life on the 2008 was rated at DOUBLE that of the 2003!

Very sad to see something that works get screwed up. If I hear of a class action on this, I'm joining it. I may not ever be able to afford this kind of "vote" to the industry again!

I had three lights come on last week on my 2009. The battery charging, engine malfunction, and ima warning lights came on. Of course when I brought it in, they looked at it and told me to bring back Monday when they could call a specialist in California. By Monday the lights had disappeared, but I took it in anyway to have them run the tests. The ima passed all the tests they threw at it, however the next day the warning lights came back. On Wednesday they called and said they were having a new module shipped to see if that corrected the problem. It didn't so they called me and told me they were going to have to replace the hybrid battery too. Luckily this was all covered by my warranty. The guy that waited on me at the dealership said that Honda has been having these issues, and have made updates to the batteries themselves, and the computer modules, so what they put in my car is not the exact same as what they took out. I am hoping that solves the problem, and if it does I hope it signals that Honda is changing their tune about their hybrid issues.

I too am from Arizona and having sudden problems with my 2009 Civic Hybrid. Took it in in mid June for oil change and haven't had any power since. Would be glad to join class action against Honda.
Interesting what others are saying. Really not funny! I complained about the AC not working correctly from the day I bought the car.
As what was stated above my mileage went way down and it is tough to get on the freeway and not feel like I am on a bike. Anyone have a idea how to overcome this one?

my 2009 hybrid has been a good car. however, the mechanic didn't know their is a special oil in the tranny. they put regular tranny oil in it. BIG MISTAKE!! it immediately caused teh belts to slip and Honda put a brand knew tranny in it. I am happy with Honda since it had 71,000 miles on it when tey did it. it was beyond warrantee but they were cool. the mpg sucks! 34 mpg around town. this is NOT what i paid for. i am thinking of selling it.

Wow!!! I thought I was the only one with a bum Honda! Everything I have been reading is what I have been experiencing. I have been telling people about this, but no one else I know has a 2009 Civic Hybrid. One of my friends sent me this site after I told him about my auto woes. My IMA light comes on and then goes off, I have air conditioner problems, and problems with my engine not shutting off at a light, and of course, I had gotten great gas mileage in the beginning, but now, it varies between 23 MPG and 32 MPG... go figure. One day it will go to 23, and then the next it is up higher. I don't get it. I, too, did all of my research, and bought this car because I thought I was both saving gas and the environment, and would have a car that held its value. I have been VERY disappointed, and frustrated with the performance of my car. When I told the dealer about these issues in the past, they told me they checked it, but that there was nothing wrong. I am going to take it back and mention the issues I have read... we'll see what happens! A class action sounds good! I would be happy trading it in for a regular Civic. Actually, I really wanted to get the Jetta Diesel, but thought that would be too risky at this time (not enough data on the car). Hah. Any comments? Suggestions? I'm just so surprised to see so many other people with the same exact problem! So... that means I don't have a lemon, but that this is a common problem. Wow.

I have a 2009 civic hybrid purchased new in 2010. I now have 4000 miles and the IMA and malfunction lights are on. I had a scan and was told to take it to the dealer. No lights were on this summer but I had no AC and paid $150 to charge the battery not knowing this was part of the problem. If there is a class action I am in. I will post when I get the car back on Thursday.

I leased a 2009 Civic Hybrid in March of 2009 and I have never had good gas mileage. IMA light came on very early on and when I brought it in they told me it needed a software update. I asked why a new car would need an update and they told me it was standard. I constantly have low battery, but mostly, it is completely inconsistent moving from low to full battery and back again arbitrarily. I have averaged about 33 MPG for the life of the car. I am really disappointed. I relied on the Honda brand name and I wish I had done my research. I agree that a class action is a necessity, Honda has knowingly produced a sub-par product that puts owners at risk when the battery tanks. I am so happy I leased and I look forward to moving on soon.

I stumbled upon this page looking for clues about the insane electrical issues I am having in my 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid. I have around 74,000 miles on it and it feels like it is falling apart! My car will just die at red lights sometimes because the meter reads that the battery is dead, when it was just 3/4 charged five minutes before. The air conditioning blows out 90 degree air in the Texas heat I drive around in daily, and having to accelerate on a hill almost certainly requires turning off the AC. Now if I leave my keys in the ignition at ACC without actually turning the engine over, my navi system flashes wildly and the car behaves as if the battery is dead. When I start it, the engine turns over with no difficulty and yet my power steering goes out and all the lights flicker menacingly. This car is not efficient or comfortable to drive. I feel like I've been duped.

bought a new 2009 hch in jan 2010, 10000 miles on it now. Ave milage = 36 mpg. My problem is the regenerative brake sys does not charge the IMA battery when cold. Drive it a mile (+or - )and it starts to charge ok. The level of charge does flucuate, too small a battery? if I drive in 2nd gear when backing off the gas pedal I get more charge and can get the charge level to 8 bars (full charge). Dealer doesn't know if thats normal or not, honda support in California knows less, and no way to talk to someone in honda who might know. Will talk with the Montana attorney general and consumer protection agency, maybe they can get hondas attention. Thanks for all your comments.

If Honda makes an adjustment, such as in the software, that intentionally lowers the mileage, then the U.S. EPA should be notified. The average fleet mileage is an officially sanctioned EPA figure. Otherwise, car dealers could give one mileage rating to the EPA and then sell a different car.

I wanted to make sure I document my 2009 Civic Hybrid experience in case anyone from Honda ever peruses this site to discover the IMA and battery issues are not isolated. My IMA battery goes off and on intermittently, my gas mileage fluctuates immensely and my engine light goes off and on. At one point my battery died in the middle of downtown Seattle --without any warning whatsoever. I feel totally unsafe in my car! So far, Honda in Calgary has replaced my IMA battery, but staff there are quite perplexed on how to permanently solve this problem. If enough people are having the same experience, we should make a claim to get new vehicles or a highly incented trade in price before our warranties end. I have purchases two CRVs before this -- decided this time to be an environmentally responsible citizen, and I get this in return. I want my CRV back!

My wife and I also want to document the same problems in our 2009 Civiv Hybrid. We bought the car used with 56,000 miles on it less than a month ago. The dealer played up the great mileage (43-45mpg) and we are sitting around 30-32 combined city/hwy driving. When we called to ask about the problem with the mileage we were told that these cars are so technologically advanced that we would get a check engine light if there was something wrong with the car. Since there is no check engine light....the 31 mpg is what the car should be getting.

Sheesh. They haven't heard the last from us. Thanks for the great info on this site.

We are also having trouble with the IMA battery. The car dies on a regular basis! The charged up battery gets depleted easily! All within one year of buying a new 09 model! Called the dealer and they are pleading ignorance. Had the car serviced today and the diagnostics came back "serious deterioration"... What a poor quality product!

I'm also having troubles with my 2009 Civic Hybrid especially after the "update". Bought the car new ~7/2009 (37 miles) and had nothing but great things to say until receiving a software update in February 2011. I saw solid MPG all over the local Tucson area averaging 47-52 all year, on long drives to Phoenix (about 100 miles of flat 75 mph interstate) I saw 55-60 MPG consistently even on days in the 100's with a full car. Nice quiet ride too once up to speed ~75 or so the CVT transmission moved the gear ratio just right and the RPM would rest ~1800-2000 RPM just like any good car in overdrive.

After getting this update, identical trips and even trips with just me driving to Phoenix, completely different story. City driving is about the same if only slightly lower at 42 - 47. At speeds past 60 however, very poor MPG. Now on rides to Phoenix the car burns much more gas and feels like a 3 or 4 speed.

For example: at 75 MPH the car remains at 2800-3300 RPM to maintain speed, its almost as if someone took away the overdrive. The ride is louder too. Then the Gas milage drops to 30-38 (from 55-60). I used to be able to drive to and from Phoenix with more than half a tank close to 3/4, now I come back with 1/4 of a tank.

Not only that, since I'm already at 3k RPM if I need to pass the engine goes to Red Line! It never did that before the update quite scary. Speed limits in TX the speed limits go up to 85 running over 4000+ RPM just to maintain speed. Near the Grand Canyon on a road with a 65 speed limit and slight incline the car stayed near 6000 RPM for about 15 miles which resulted in a reading of 17 MPG (wish I took a picture) for at ~50 mile odometer trip reset. Going uphill in this car now is scary the car red lines all the time and at times it just will not go any faster. Did not have these troubles in previous trips on these same roads.

Honda dealer can't undo the update and Honda customer service stated they cannot do anything to help me and 2 complaints fell on deaf ears. This is my 2nd Honda and with incompetence like this coming from them possibly my last. Apparently correcting a CVT gear ratio is rocket science.

Has anyone else noticed this significant change in how the CVT operates at freeway speeds on the Civic Hybrid? Or know of a solution to this problem?

Ahhhhh.... now it is all making sense. I have a 08 Civic hybrid and chalked a lot of quirkiness as the price of owning a hybrid. The AC is horrible in the summer in Phoenix, the car is a "dog" to say the least and now I have a check engine light on that says I have to replace the IMA batteries and, of course, I just went over 80,000 miles. My gas mileage went down significantly after I made the mistake of letting the dealer install the updates too so now I am stuck with a car that gets the same gas mileage as a regular civic but with half the acceleration and power. Ha… AND the batteries died (or are dying) at 85K anyway!!! The only thing I like about my car is the fact that I can use the carpool lane. I feel sorry for the people that bought their car after Arizona ran out of the special plates because I see no possible advantage of having this car other than being able to use the carpool lane by myself.

I have 2009 HCH. Same problem, the battery light came on at 67K and dealer is in the process of obtaining it. I bought it used and was getting about 39MPG in PA for the past 12000 miles. See how it goes with the new battery once it is installed. But hope I do not need to do this every 65K miles....

Same thing happens with my 2008 HCH except, I have to jump my battery. The car won't start. So frustrating.

I also had the software ?upgrade?, because using the car in the Summer was causing the main battery to not charge and since the change, the battery stays charged BUT my gas mileage has depleted considerably. I didn't notice a difference in power.

I too have a 2009 HCH...started having problems with battery charge and poor mileage in summer 2011. The IMA battery was replaced under warranty in Oct 2011 (~42,000 miles). I was hopeful that my mileage would get better, but it is still in the low 30s. After reading the posts here, I realize how lucky I am that I have not had the battery stall or leave me in a dangerous situation.
I will try going back to the dealer to see if there is anything they can do.
Of course, low 30s is not bad mileage for a regular car, but for a hybrid? I now realize that I should have bought a Prius if I really wanted better mileage.

Just another question- has anyone noticed their car "lurching" sometimes when braking? I am not sure how to describe it, but it is not right; it feels like something is slipping?

2009 HCH... IMA failure codes frequently, especially when the weather gets cool. I live on Long Island, New York. I leased the car, and so far have been happy. I have a 45 minute commute, which is a lot shorter because of the "clean pass" stickers allowing me to use the HOV lane on the LIE.

First winter of ownership sparked the dreaded IMA failure light. I read the code before taking the car to the dealer. A software update was performed. The behavior of the car was noticeably different. The charge status gauge did not appear to reflect the correct info, and the car seemed more lethargic. I assumed it was because of the weather, and the low temperature effects on the battery (ever use a cold cordless drill in your frigid garage?) Winter seems to reduce the miles per gallon on my HCH, so i didn't notice the decrease. Anyway, springtime arrived, and all seemed well until lately.

The first cold snap of this winter is upon us. The car is now dangerous to drive. I thin I can run faster than it can accelerate. The IMA light goes on and off, and the battery gauge is useless. Why would the mechanical starter engage when the battery status says full charge. Also, I noticed the car will not shut the engine down at traffic lights, even when the climate controls are turned off (a hint to force the shut down- no heating or cooling request).

Going to the dealer tomorrow... We'll see. Glad I leased it!

Got the deaded IMA fault at about 43k on my 2009 HCH. Having the same issues decreased fuel mileage, poor a/c operation and very sluggish (almost unsafe) acceleration. Never have come close to the EPA mileage numbers before or after repairs. I average about 32mpg. This is all after Honda replaced the IMA battery, controller and software update. Bummed I didnt buy a regular civic and saved the money. What can we do as angry customers?

Hybrid worries

Reading this site causes me great distress.

I live in Melbourne Australia and all the problems with low fuel milage, change of software, hi reving with low power, battery going down and recharging, lack of action from Honda with them saying there is an update to fix the problems (which only made it worse) and this morning the IMA light coming on, I am at a loss of where to go. Australia unlike the USA doesn't have as many Hybrids and a class action there would help but! I think it would be to late for me.

i bought a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid and IMA battery light went on at 10,066 miles, did the software update at 17,115 miles , then at 24,082 IMA battery bad again, Honda knowingly and intentionally sold me a car with battery problems and failed to disclose such information to me at the time of the transaction into which i would not have entered into if the information had been disclosed to me. That is why they do not tell you the car has battery problems.and continuly to do so. I also bought the extended warrenty. The seat will not stay at height you put it. and they refuse to fix it. Car had rust when i bought it. The software update states "Frequent stop-and-go drivig during warm weather will deteriorate IMA battery". I live in south Texas. I HAVE A CAR I CAN NOT USE OR THE BATTERY WILL DETERIORATE.

I bought a brand new 2004 HCH and I have had nothing but good luck with the car. I don't do the schedule maintenance change of oil or any other maintenance. In fact my first change of oil was at 75K miles.
at 105k miles, I replaced the AC compressor and change transmission oil and flush the coolant from the radiator. I have replaced the tires 2 times. I never wash the car nor clean the inside. It is my beater car for local uses. I got a tax break and financed it for 60 months with 0 percent down payment and 0 percent interest. This beautiful car goes and goes and goes. I have unlimited power for up hills and get a nice 44 miles per gallon efficiency. From reading the blog It seems all the problems arise from the software updates and the car been built mostly on 2009.
I almost bought a 2012 civic hybrid again, but instead I bought the v6 EXL 4 door sedan without the navigation system. I just happened to find this website that sells the IMA battery pack for only $2000. I hope this helps for those of you that need new IMA battery replacement. Here is the Link http://www.hybrid-battery.com/hch2/new.html
Good luck people!!

Well, after 3hrs at the dealership, emailing all the information I found here, plus more internet information, I now have a 'regular LX 2010 Honda Civic' . Car battery never did charge fully, despite very conservative driving. I think they duped me price wise, but quite frankly, I'm just glad to not worry about the hybrid! So wish I'd seen this website before I purhased the hybrid...good luck to you all and I hope somehow your hybrids will have recalls like Toyota stepped up with all their problems.

I bought mine like 3 weeks ago with 33k on it. Bought extended waaranty and now after reading these posts I understand that I have been ripped off. The car getting 32-33 mpg in the city with moderate driving and 39-40 mpg on freeway going with speeds 70-80 pmg. Also I was able to get better freeway milage driving aroung 55-65mpg getting the max of 45mpg. I am dssapointed with purchase overall and not sure what to do at this point.
