2005 vs. 2007

Created May 31, 2007, at 1:36 am by stevietheb

Howdy all,

I've gotten a lot of info on the boards here. I'm interested in buying a Prius. I went and test drove a 2007 and loved it.

However, I noticed a comparably equipped 2005 with 30k miles was for sale at a local dealership for $4000-5000 less than a new one. The online photos make it look like it's in good shape...but I will know that for sure when I test drive it Thursday or Friday.

I really just have one question:

What are the differences between the 2005 and the 2007?

They look extremely similar. Does the current model have more legroom or cargo space? Assuming the used Prius is in great condition, would there be any reason to consider going with new instead? (I'm not a new car fanatic...and I assume the warranty on the hybrid stuff would still be intact).

Thanks!

On top of my list, I will tell you, 2007 has more standard safety features.
Side curtain airbag is for one.

Second, used 2005 with 30K miles on it, the general warranty you have from manufacture is about done. Unless you bought from the dealership, which you might be able to buy any extended warranty. It's not necessary to have warranty for Toyota or Honda, but you never know, that's why it's called "warranty".

Third, there are couple recalls in 2006 for previous model years, make sure the used one are up to date for all recalls.

Fourth, not the least, you can still get 25% of tax credit if you buy a 2007 and the sales tax can be deducted, ask your tax guy for further detail base on your situation.

Fifth, consider the resell value in 5-8 years, the 2005 vs the 2007, which one can give you more money back.

Then, consider all other points that matter to you the most, then make your decision.

Good hunting.

Thanks, minerval, for your response.

When I look purely at the finances of the deal, I feel like the 2005 might be better. I'm not too worried about the warranty situation. My understanding is that the hybrid portion of the drivetrain has a longer warranty (100k miles?) and that's what I would be most worried about.

Looking at recalls for that model year, there are a couple...thanks for the head's up there. Honestly, I hadn't even thought of that.

So, are there any significant differences between the design of the 2005 and the 2007?

Thanks again...

I own a 2005 Prius with 35K miles. I have the model with everything except the NAV options. It has the side curtain airbags, VSC, fog lamps, etc. The big difference is your color choices and I think a little chrome on the grill.

The car is still performing like new and in the warm months we are averaging 55-56 mpg 50/50 city hwy.

I also found an '05 for sale near me and an thinking about it. My main concern is it has over 61k miles on it. Does anyone think that is too much to dive into with that model year?

The Prius taxi that I take to the airport on business trips has over 150K miles of heavy, hilly driving on it. The driver has had no troubles with it, nor have any of the other Prius cabs in the fleet.
