I recently drove 640 miles from long island new york to cherry springs state park PA. I logged in 58.5 mpg but that was with 2 gallons of local fuel burned off before I left. The 58.5 mpg was the first going out measurement; point A. Average speed 58 mph with cruise set, and about 150 lbs of astronomy equipment. This was in a 65 mph speed zone and the car had 10% ethanol in the tank. Traffic was a problem early on but improved. The mileage was about 330 miles and the trip counter said 60.5 mpg. The actual at the pump was 58.5 mpg which was within .5 mpg for the overall tank measurement .So the trip counter was also very close. The return trip was very interesting. I went into a real hyper mile mode. I took a different rout home , but both ways were very hilly interstate hwys. I have the manual trans. and I once again set cruise while on the hwy at 58 mph. I did draft behind an 18 wheeler for about 15 miles. Yes I know I killed the real world average a little but the whole idea for me was to bring the car home with the least mileage possible. I even turned the car off going down hill once. All said and done with, I ended up with 66.7 mpg for my return trip at the pump.
