03 HCH is acting up something fierce

Created May 1, 2008, at 7:48 pm by bigedrink

okay, new user to this forum but it seems as though this group isn't as bad as some other forums i've seen...so i've got my fingers crossed.

car is a '03 HCH with a little over 130K on the clock and it's still on it's first owner.

Our problems started a couple days ago when we were driving back from the dog park and the IMA light popped on. it stayed on a couple minutes but then shut off...no problem to note otherwise. Yesterday, driving the girls home from school (about 4 miles), it pops on again and stays on until we get home. I pull in the drive, shut it off and hope it's just better by morning. it sat for about 15 hours until morning. Go to get something out of the car (my remote is dead) so i unlock the door manually with my key, i do the door handle trick to lock it back and locks just click, don't budge tho...battery is dead

i pull up the other car to jump the HCH and it turns over quickly, the batteries all charged back up. wife drove it to work. it sat for about 8 hours. it wouldn't start after work. i jumped it again and same result...turned over easily and quickly. no dummy lights were on at this point

I figured the battery must be shot, it was only 3 months old so i went back to autozone to get it tested, they said it was fine. the sales guy rec'd buying an alternator, so i went into price one and they couldn't even get it so...to dealership with me!!!

driving to the dealership (2 miles down the road)...the IMA light popped on, the brake light popped on and the ABS light popped on

I like to think i'm mechanically inclined but with that many dummy lights on, i hesitate to try...
we left it with the dealership...what should we expect to hear back tomorrow? and also, how expensive are we thinking this is going to be?

Hi bigedrink:

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

You car does not have an alternator so forget about trying to diagnose the 12V "charging system" unless you have an HDS station. Only Honda dealerships have those and you did well taking it in. Now, one thing that was not clear to me is whether your car has a CVT or Manual Transmission. This info would help narrow things down a bit.

One last question would be: Have you been servicing the car at the dealership and if yes, do you recall what updates has it received recently?

cvt auto

and it went in regularly up until the last time when they wanted more than we could afford, i did most of it myself tho...don't think there was any computer upgrades to it at that point

we just dropped it off at this point. around 5p today. they were going to look at it tomorrow.

i just wanted some ideas as to what i might be looking at regarding what's wrong...and how much it might run me

that many lights on makes me scared it might be a tranny problem

they told us it needed a new battery. luckily the battery was only 3 months old from autozone (sorry but i won't pay the dealer $200+ to install a $70 battery - it takes all of 8 minutes to do it).

autozone replaced it under warranty (they tested it and said it just had a low charge) mainly because the dealer said it was bad; they did not seem too pleased with having to do it either. the lights stayed on after the battery was changed until i turned off the car and restarted it again, then they stayed off.

wife got in the car this morning and the problem has re-emerged. IMA, brake and ABS light are all on again

Did they perform an HDS diagnostics on the car?
In other words, did they check on the health of the DC-DC, MCM and the BCM? If they did and they all checked OK then I would point to one of the following culprits:

- Bad accessories relay
- Malfunctioning power steering
- Malfrunctioning Fan or other high drain device in the climate control system.

My experience with autozone batteries is they stink. Buck up and get an OEM.
