February 2016 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall sales for February were up from a year ago. January and February are generally the weakest months of the year in terms of sales volume, and that is essentially the case this year, although February sales were the strongest for the month since 2001.

Sales in each of the categories were up over January but shares of hybrids and electrics were similar to what they were in January.

Full electric vehicle sales were down modestly from February of last year given declines in both the Nissan Leaf and the BMW i3. We estimate that sales of the Tesla Model S improved from January and year-ago, but sales of the Model X remain modest at an estimated 500 units.

SEE ALSO: January 2016 Dashboard

As noted in Tesla’s conference call announcing its quarterly results, the company expects to make the Model X available to journalists for testing in the coming weeks. That will be a signal that production is becoming more “normalized” leading to higher production and sales volumes going forward. It appears that availability of the BMW i3 remain an issue, as sales have been very low after a strong December when a push was made to meet annual sales goals.

Plug-in hybrids actually had a good month as compared to February 2015 as the segment leader (Volt) sold over 1,000 copies and many of those sold were the 2017 version which will be available throughout the country. Volt numbers should continue to increase due to wider availability going forward. For the first two months of the year, the vehicle was up over 70 percent from a weak 2014.

While the volumes for many of the vehicles in this category are relatively modest, we will continue to see new products both this year and next that will result in higher category sales. The lack of availability of the Prius Plug In for most of the year will offset the increase from new products.

Hybrids had another poor month, with the new Toyota RAV4 hybrid attempting to fill the void caused by a variety of poor performers. In fact, the new RAV4 placed second behind the Prius Liftback. The Prius family sold 10,500 units as compared to almost 11,500 a year ago. For the first two months of the year, most hybrids were down from year-ago. The Lexus RX, Lincoln MKZ, and Hyundai Sonata all turned in strong performances as did the aforementioned RAV4.

Of course, the diesel segment continues to struggle as VW has still not reached an agreement with the EPA and the California Air Resources Board on a fix for its products. A judge has ruled that a settlement must be finalized later this month, although that is not necessarily a guarantee it will occur. Even with the settlement, it will take many months for these vehicles to be back on sale with consumer reception still unclear. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon diesels were in the market for the second month and their volumes increased as availability increased. The current version of the Cruze diesel will soon be out of production and the replacement product is still some months away.
