Just at a much lower rate than most of the other technologies mentioned.

Natural gas would be an option for the standard oil company since they already produce some as by-products of their current process.

Also the author of this article neglects the fact that our military is the largest buyer of oil in the US not the car industry. They are moving towards oil independence but when they are stationed overseas and have at least one generator for each building running 24/7. There is no question why we need to find some better alternatives or great improvements on what we have. If piezo-electricity was viable as a carpet or mats around the base that would be great.
