With any vehicle, if you are planning on owning it for any span of time, it would be wise to pay attention to the resell value of your car. After all, the depreciation of your vehicle will determine how much you will receive in a trade-in, which, considering the price of gas, it is nice to save money where you can.

That's exactly what I want to know.

The biggest complaint about the potential electric car fleet is that you can only drive 300 miles without needing to fully recharge (something people apparently aren't willing to deal with). But a diesel generator (Like the one I use when the power goes out) should be able to double that number. How many people really plan on driving more than 600 miles without being able to recharge?

Would love to see a "pure electric" vehicle (propelled entirely by electric motor) but "fueled" by the tiniest tdi diesel generator possible.

Why wouldn't this be an economical approach until the battery technology matures?

Yes, I would love to have an option to by a fully electric car that could give me 300 miles on full charge, but unfortunately such option doesn't exist currently. And trust me I am not the only person that wan't this option.

Hybrid technology and plug in hybrids are stepping stones to get us to fully electric cars. With new policy passed by Obama's administration that requires higher gas mileage we are finally getting more efficient cars. It is funny how every company was saying it can't be done and now starting with 2011 models every car is more efficient then 2010 model, and some of them are even cheaper.

I think that if companies continue investing into R&D to improve cost and efficiency of batteries we will start seeing more electric cars in near future. It will take some time.

It is great that Nissan will introduce fully electric car for masses this year, we will get only 100 miles on full charge but hopefully they will be able to lower costs and increase battery capacity for 2012 and future models. Then in 2012-13 we should see Tesla Model S which should be offered with 160, 200 and 300 mile batteries.

Either way, it will take some time to bring costs down but once that happens electric cars will slowly start replacing Gasoline Counterparts.

You know what is a real shame? That you can't get the twincharger TSI engines without the hybrid stuff in the US. Put one of those in the Jetta or Golf and you have a decent fuel efficient car that is also affordable. I'd take one of those with a manual transmission over the hybrid any day. Of course, my first pick would be the TDI. It's going to be interesting to see what happens when you have three choices for the Jetta - gasoline only, diesel, and hybrid. Wonder what the take rates will be.

Well, if American manufacturers had designed a costly SUV that only did 20 mpg, I don't think the automotive world would be terribly thrilled about it.
Come to think of it, they have already done this, and were met with indifference and low sales figures.

With all the hoopla car manufacturers are putting into the hybrid arena (now that they're forced to) you'd think some of them would realize the advantage of a pure electric car.

I'm glad Nissan is taking the lead on this one, at least there will be one major manufacturer providing such a vehicle.

If manufacturers could just 'get' adding an electric only option to their vehicle lines, they might be suprised to see how many people go that route. Stripping out the gas engine entirely (heck you can even remove the transmission if you design an electric with direct drive) can significantly offset the cost of the battery that powers an electric only vehicle.

I hate preaching, its like it goes in one ear and out the other. Some people get it, for those others, like teenagers, its just gonna take some time before they finally get it.
