Thanks for the article!

It's nice to know more about how the fuel economy of the future will ACTUALLY be given to us -- by hard working engineers and managers like those at Eaton. These people are terrific and do more in ten minutes of their time than a politician does in a year. Thanks again.

Thanks for coming to Michigan to see some of the INNOVATION that will (hopefully) drive more US jobs and make us "greener" at the same time.

At the Eaton Design Center near Kalamazoo, where I live, they've been working on hybrid transmissions for large trucks for quite some time. Many large diesels now use this technology. (The electric motor is incorporated in the transmission housing).
Manufactures do not need these technologies to meet new 2016 CAFE standards which are 40 MPG cars and 30 MPG trucks and SUVs. The new CAFE standards are actually not so strict. Toyota already had in 2009: 37 MPG for cars and 26 MPG for trucks and SUVs.
CAFE numbers and EPA Window sticker numbers are two different things - CAFE numbers for the same car are actually 30% higher than EPA window sticker numbers. So manufactures do not need any new technologies - they will sell just a tiny-wee more smaller cars - that is enough.
