Max - if we really want to reduce oil consumption we should be driving more efficient vehicles. As far as bio fuels go - switch to butanol it does not require expensive engine modifications and has an energy density closer to gasoline. Butanol can be produced in the same plants that are now making ethanol.

Liquid buiofuel is a failure as there is more fossil fuel energy going into the production than we get out. It will NEVER be an alternative as one year of fossil fuel consumption equals 400 year of photosynthesis. http://www.post-carbon-living.com/Substitute_Bio_Fuels.htm.

Also it uses vast amount of water in it's production and makes food prices go up.

So because the energy density of ethanol is lower than gasoline - for the same amount of power or fuel mileage - the same amount of carbon is produced - in other words as far as polution goes - ethanol at best is a wash when compared to gasoline. So then we are producing ethanol to reduce our need of foreign oil? But wait!?! We are now going to import some of our ethanol from Brazil?!?
Maybe it IS time to go electric...

It seems like we're just moving the deck chairs around on the Titanic rather than accepting that our liquid fuels issue isn't a problem that can be solved without drastic change, it's a dilema and dilemas can't be solved.
