BMWi Ventures announced today that it is embarking upon a strategic investment in Coulomb Technologies, a company, which has developed the largest online EV charging network in the world to date, via its ChargePoint stations.
The investment by BMWi Ventures is designed to support further development of a charging infrastructure for EVs and plug-in hybrids, such as BMW’s own i3 and i8 models.
ChargePoint stations currently offer what is arguably the best solution for both owners of the units and also EV drivers, with relatively simple and efficient software that not only helps owners manage their charging stations, but for motorists also provides efficient pricing, payment processing and driver support, as well as locating and reservation for use features.
As a result, the move by BMWi Ventures is seen as a logical step in building upon an already promising EV charging infrastructure. In regards to the investment announcement, Dr. Ulrich Quay, managing director of BMWi Ventures; remarked that “BMW is focused on providing comprehensive services that make the charging of BMW electric vehicles a premium experience. ChargePoint is the largest, longest established network with a significantly advanced and mature feature set. This investment will forge a close and strategic relationship as we further our electric mobility offer.”
Pat Romano, Coulomb Technologies’ president and CEO, added, “we are delighted to have one of the world’s premier automakers join our investor team. We look forward to working with BMW to expand our global footprint and help support the adoption of electric vehicles worldwide.”
