BMW Video Teases Pre-Production i8 Roadster

BMW just released a short teaser video showcasing its upcoming i8 Roadster convertible sports car.

This video shows the convertible’s removable roof in place as it undergoes what appears to be road testing in its pre-production stage.

The i8 Roadster is showcased in camouflage exterior with wind tunnel testing taking place. Its wing doors rise right before streams of blue light outline the car in waves.

The video suggests power will come from the plug-in hybrid’s electric powertrain efficiently gliding through aerodynamic efficiency.

The message seems to be that the sports car is moving forward on its 2018 scheduled launch. Other themes in the video appear to be that it will be close to the BMW i8 hard top in performance, and a member of the i-Series family presenting sustainable electric cars of the future.

Its powertrain is expected to be carried over from the BMW i8. There was talk last year about the i8 Roadster getting a better battery pack; and that it will be engineered for a 10 percent boost to make it to 420 in horsepower when the electric drivetrain merges with power from the 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine.

The company said the two-seat roadster would blend “lightness, dynamic capability and efficiency with a very special aesthetic allure.”

BMW chief executive Harald Kruger last year in May confirmed that the i8 Roadster had been approved for production. That prototype had been displayed in concept form for several years.

It’s expected to come to market ahead of the next version of the Tesla Roadster. That limited-edition performance convertible is expected to be revealed with its new look in 2020.

BMW will also be releasing the first battery electric Mini during 2019. Other electrified product plans include an all-electric version of the BMW X3, and the all-electric BMW iNEXT is scheduled to come out in 2021.
