I’m really glad to see that they are working on fossil fuel alternatives. The problem with biomass that no one is talking about is that you can’t keep taking the branches and leaves out of the forest without an impact. Most of the nutrients in trees are concentrated in the branches, and when they are removed from the forest instead of returned to the forest floor, the forests will quickly degrade. I’ve talked to a couple of really good, environmentally knowledgeable foresters, and they feel that we can probably remove all of the slash once without a major impact, but after that the forests are on a downhill trajectory. Waste from agricultural processes is probably more promising.
