August 2016 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall passenger vehicle sales for August were flat compared to a year ago and down slightly from July 2016.

Through the first eight months of the year, overall sales were up 0.5 percent from the comparable 2015 period. Thus, overall sales are strong as last year a record 17.47 million vehicles were sold in the U.S., but it appears a plateau has been reached.

As for plug-in hybrids and all-electirc vehicles, compared to a year-ago, August sales were up significantly. Hybrid electric and diesel sales were both down significantly. As compared to July, August sales were up for diesels and battery electrics.

Battery electric vehicle sales were up from July with strong sales of the Tesla products and the VW e-Golf offsetting declines in the BMW i3 and flat sales of the Nissan Leaf. Tesla – which carries nearly 60 percent of the BEV market – nonetheless has a lot of catching up to do to meet its annual sales goal and we expect to see sales at stronger levels for the rest of the year since it has improved its manufacturing output. That suggests that the normal pattern of low sales early in the quarter with a strong final month is less likely to occur since Tesla is working hard to meet its aggressive sales goals through the end of the year (via product and pricing). New models (on both the low end and high end) of the Model S will facilitate this goal which is necessary since Model X sales appear to be below plan. In fact, the gull wing doors, according to Elon Musk, are just now meeting usage and quality goals (software updates are of course provided to all buyers so that they can benefit from the improvements). As is the norm, the Nissan Leaf continues to struggle. Year-to-date, the share of sales relative to total sales is up from last year at 0.44 percent. However, the August share is at a much higher level at 0.57 percent (which was above the level in July).

Plug-in hybrids were down from last month, and strongly ahead of year-ago levels on the strength of the Chevy Volt and Ford Fusion Energi. Year-to-date, those two models are well ahead of 2015 levels. In August, the Volt returned (downward) to sales levels that it had established in previous months (approximately 2,000). As noted previously, the Fusion Energi has been redesigned recently and thus volumes should be strong for the remainder of the year.

Hybrid sales in August were down slightly from July and down almost 15 percent from last August. The Prius Liftback has been gradually increasing since the beginning of the year, but seems to have leveled off at around 10,000 monthly which is well below monthly sales when fuel prices were higher. It is also notable that Prius sales in Japan are very strong and thus fewer vehicles are being made available to the U.S. since demand is relatively modest. The RAV4 hybrid continues to do well and is filling in some of the losses from the Prius family (the Prius C and V are not doing well as these models have not been updated) and the Camry hybrid which is down by a third year-to-date. Sales of the Malibu hybrid are increasing as availability improves.

On the diesel front, discussions between VW and US regulators are moving forward, both with respect to more details on fixes for the 2.0 engine and less advanced discussions on the 3.0 engine. Of course, nothing is final, so these products remain off the market. The Jaguar XE is now available, but volumes will be very limited. The Ram Pickup had a good month as did the diesel version. If we exclude all VW Group products, year-to-date diesel sales are up 4.5 percent.
