August 2015 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall sales for August continued at a high level, exceeding both July 2015 although slightly less than August 2014. The main reason for the decline is due to the calendar, namely Labor Day last year (September 1) was counted in August sales, while this year its later dater (September 7) means that it is obviously counted in September. Overall sales in recent months have been strong, with trucks increasing significantly offsetting a decline in car sales. Hybrids were up from previous months, while the other categories were more or less in line with previous months.

Sales for full electric vehicles were up slightly from July of this year and down significantly from August 2014. The LEAF had very strong sales in August 2014 (almost 3,200), while sales were only 1,393 this August. Since April, production of the LEAF has been at modest levels in anticipation of the updated Model Year 2016 product. Model S sales were also modest, due in part to downtime as Tesla begins to prepare for Model X production. In addition, the plant had a power outage in mid-August, which of course resulted in some loss of production. We estimate that Model S sales in August were ahead of the results from last August. Sales of the BMW i3 were almost 800 units which is slightly below average, but is driven almost entirely by availability. The e-Golf had a good month selling almost 400 units and registering its second best result since it was introduced.

Plug in hybrids had a moderate month, with most vehicles selling at a similar level to July 2015. Inventory of the Prius Plug In is running low and will not be increased for over a year as the current model is now out of production. The Volvo XC90 launched as a plug in in August with 4 buyers taking home their new ride (the MSRP is $68,000). The Chevy Volt is the key player here and the good news is that the production of the second generation product has begun and we should start to see sales pick up in October (probably not enough inventory available for strong September results).

The hybrid category was up in August vs. July and in fact the segment exceeded the growth in overall sales. Of course this was not true as compared to August of last year, as sales this year were down almost 22 percent. Year-to-date, hybrid sales are down almost 19 percent. As noted previously, declining sales of cars, lower fuel prices, and aging product in key cases (Prius) are all responsible for this result. The new Prius Liftback is coming soon with higher fuel economy and more importantly a design that should elicit approval from more buyers. Total Prius hybrid sales (Liftback, V, and C) in August were above last month and well ahead of June. The high-volume hybrids have generally trailed last year’s results and the experience of Toyota and Ford drive the segment.

Diesel sales year-to-date are down slightly from last year, with growth in the Ram Pickup and some VW products offsetting declines elsewhere. Volume on the Ram Pickup is down from prior months due to product shortages (the engine is used in a variety of products in Europe and the US and is not fully available to meet the demand on the Ram). The replacement for the Mercedes ML-Class is the GLE-Class and its launch has occurred with first month diesel volume included. The VW Golf continues to perform well, both in hatch and particularly in wagon form. This is true for the model as a whole and the diesel versions.
