August 2014 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

August was a stellar month for the market as a whole, with the seasonally adjusted rate – accounting for typical ebbs and flows during the year – the highest since January 2006.

Electric vehicles had their best month ever, edging out the previous high of May of this year by 50 units. Hybrids also had a good month, falling short of the highest recent level of August 2013. In fact, last month represented the fourth historically best month for hybrids.

Battery electric sales also reached an all-time high based in part on new entrants and strong Nissan Leaf sales.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles as a share of the total market were at 0.38 percent which is consistent with the results of previous months, albeit not at record levels (compared to 0.53 percent in October 2013).

The Chevy Volt had a strong month at 2,511 units, well above the results of recent months. The Cadillac ELR had its best ever month at 196 units, no doubt aided by higher incentives. The BMW i8 debuted with 9 sales; its high price will of course limit volumes. The Ford C-Max Energi also had a good month at over 1,000 units sold.

Battery electric vehicles reached an all-time high in share (at 0.41 percent and just ahead of the July 2014 share). Reaching this share is particularly notable given the size of the overall market at almost 1.6 million vehicles. Among battery electrics, the Nissan Leaf remains the category leader and obtained its best result ever. More importantly, it has maintained consistently high sales levels for the last several months.

Tesla Model S sales were down somewhat this month, primarily due to the closing of the Fremont plant in late July and early August for updates and preparation for production of the Model X which will begin next year. Volume for the BMW i3 (some of these vehicles are plug ins but the split is not made available so we categorize this vehicle as a battery electric) increased as more volume became available.

Among hybrid vehicles, the group of Lexus hybrids did very well, particularly the volume leaders, the CT and ES. Volumes of the Toyota Avalon hybrid reached an all-time high, with almost 30 percent of total sales of the nameplate (a level just above the share achieved in recent months). As a point of comparison, Camry hybrids represent a 10-percent share of the popular nameplate with sales of over 4,000 monthly (although of course Camry hybrid volume is much greater than that of the Avalon hybrid). The three Prius hybrid variants achieved over 22,500 sales, the best result since May 2014 and before that August 2013.

Diesel volume continued to moderate from higher volumes of previous months, with the share at the lowest level since April 2013. Of course, the Jetta and Passat (category leaders) determine the status of the category and they remain below higher levels of previous months (overall sales of these nameplates are also down).
