July 2013 Dashboard

The HybridCars.com monthly sales dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall vehicle sales declined modestly from July to June, as did the sales rate although it was still strong. Hybrid sales were up vs. June and therefore their share of the market increased to the highest level since July 2009 and the second highest share ever. For the year, hybrids are doing much better than the overall market with a growth rate of over 20 percent (vs. the overall growth rate of over 8 percent). Plug ins actually had a relatively poor month as the three market leaders (Volt, Leaf, and Model S) all declined from last month. Year-to-date, sales volumes are of course up dramatically. Diesel sales had a good month, growing 12 percent vs. June and 38 percent over last July. A number of new vehicles contributed to this growth as discussed below.

The sum of hybrid, diesel, and plug in vehicles exceeded five percent of the market in July. This is the first time that mark has been reached and is due to the growth in product choice in these “alternative vehicle” segments.

The Volt and the Leaf both had relatively poor months, due in large part to availability. Both vehicles are produced in plants that produce other popular vehicles and more production should lead to higher sales going forward. Tesla’s Model S sales are down somewhat as some production is routed to Europe as they launch sales there. The Prius Plug in had its best sales month since January.

The Prius (in its various varieties) had a strong month as did the Camry. Since Toyota represents 70 percent of total hybrid sales, the company’s success carried the segment. Ford’s hybrids paused somewhat this month, with both declining from month-ago levels. GM’s mild hybrids (Malibu, Regal and Lacrosse) continue to achieve modest sales as the higher price for modest fuel economy improvement attracts limited interest. Ford has indicated its intention to increase production of Lincoln MKZ hybrids (offered at the same price as internal combustion versions), so their sales should increase going forward.

July was a stellar month for the leaders in the diesel segment, namely the VW Jetta and Passat. In addition, Audi has launched the A6, A7, and Q5 in diesel form. The Chevy Cruze is in its second month of availability, and volumes will increase going forward. We are still awaiting the first sales of the Grand Cherokee diesel, which will be followed in the fall by the Ram diesel.
